Laminate or butcher block countertops?
Starter home has original 1966 cabinets. Newer white appliances. Can't afford solid surface or natural stone counters. Planning to sell in 3-5 years. Young family not always careful with wiping up spills right away. Love the look of wood but need something forgiving in a house with young children.
Is laminate always the kiss of death for resale value? Would go with gray countertops above painted white cabinets with pewter hardware.

Set-In Stains on Laminate Countertops?
My husband and I are currently renting a townhouse, and the kitchen and bathroom counter-tops have a cornflower blue laminate. Unfortunately, the people that rented before us either left pools of water on the counter-tops or they rarely cleaned, and there are very large stains that have proven to be very difficult to remove. I have tried different products ranging from Lysol Kitchen Cleanup, Pinesol, Windex, Baking Soda, and Comet. Has anyone had a similar problem? Does anyone have any pointers to remove these stains? I highly doubt the leasing manager will allow me to install new laminate to the counter-tops or even elect to install new counter-tops for me. Please help! I would love to have a beautiful kitchen and bathroom! Thanks in advance!

examples? Are they the 'Formica' and they have changed the name?

I painted over my laminate counter-tops with RUST-OLEUM paint and it looks bad. How can I remove it?
Wow. You need paint and finish remover. Apply it to the painted surface and let it bubble up. Scrape it off or use steel wool to scrub it off. It's a mess.
Don't paint your countertop, especially if you're talking kitchen countertops. The paint you're talking about is expensive and it may not be something that food should come in contact with.
You're either stuck with it or you can pry it off and buy new.
